A band is a team with a shared goal. It works best when everyone knows what they're responsible for and how decisions get made.
Share the responsibility
No one should have to keep track of everything. Split the work into areas – music and recording, PR and pitches, social media, booking and live, finances and rights, coordination – and give each area one person responsible. Responsible doesn't mean doing it all yourself, just making sure it gets done.
Decide how you decide
Does everything need everyone's agreement, or is a majority enough? What can the responsible person decide alone? A short meeting once a week, ideally on the same day, keeps decisions out of group chats nobody reads.
Write a band agreement
A simple one-page band agreement prevents most conflicts. Write down:
- who owns the band name and what happens to it if the band splits
- how songs are shared – who wrote what (splits)
- who owns the gear and what was bought together
- how money is shared and what happens to shared money
- what applies if someone leaves
Update it when something changes, such as when a new member joins.
Do it now: Share out the areas under "Who does what?" and book a first band meeting to go through the points above.
