A sustainable band – time, energy, hearing and relationships

What makes bands last is rarely talent. It's habits, rhythm and looking after each other.

Most bands don't stop because the music runs out, but because the energy does.

Time

Music competes with jobs, studies and family. Decide how much time the band really has – and plan for that, not for the dream. Ten minutes a week on the right things beats a weekend of stress before every release.

Hearing

Your hearing is your most important instrument and it can't be repaired. Use hearing protection at rehearsals and shows, and keep the volume in the rehearsal room as low as you can.

Conflicts

Raise things early and calmly – not in the middle of a show or in a group chat. A band agreement and clear responsibilities prevent most of it.

Rhythm

Keep a fixed weekly routine, celebrate what goes well and rest between intense periods. A campaign takes a couple of months – you need a break afterwards.

Do it now: Use Your 10 minutes this week as the band's weekly routine and go through it together once a week.
